Dr. Trevor Boffone is a Houston-based educator, writer, and content creator. He is a lecturer in the Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program at the University of Houston and a Social Media Manager at Fun Love Media. His work using TikTok and social media with his students has been featured on Good Morning America, ABC News, Inside Edition, and Access Hollywood, among numerous national media platforms. Insider named him to their 2020 Doers List, recognizing “trailblazers creating hope and inspiring us.”
Dr. Boffone is the author of Renegades: Digital Dance Cultures from Dubsmash to TikTok (Oxford University Press, 2021), Social Media in Musical Theatre (Methuen Drama, 2023), and TikTok Broadway: Musical Theatre Fandom in the Digital Age (Oxford University Press, 2024). He is the editor of TikTok Cultures in the United States (Routledge, 2022). He is the co-author of Latinx Teens: U.S. Popular Culture on the Page, Stage, and Screen (University of Arizona Press, 2022). He is the co-editor of Encuentro: Latinx Performance for the New American Theater (Northwestern University Press, 2019); Teatro Latino: Nuevas obras de los Estados Unidos (La Casita Grande, 2019); Nerds, Goths, Geeks, and Freaks: Outsiders in Chicanx/Latinx Young Adult Literature (University Press of Mississippi, 2020); Shakespeare and Latinidad (Edinburgh University Press, 2021); and Seeking Common Ground: Latinx and Latin American Theatre and Performance (Methuen Drama, 2021).
Dr. Boffone is a scholar and public intellectual whose commentary on popular culture, social media, theatre, and performance has appeared in American Theater Magazine, Theatre Journal, Latin American Theatre Review, HowlRound, TheTheatreTimes, Arts+Culture Texas, PopMatters, and Houston Press, among other publications. As an advocate for Latinx theatre, Dr. Boffone is the founder of the 50 Playwrights Project and serves on the National Steering Committee for the Latinx Theatre Commons. From 2018-2020, he was the producer of the Sin Muros: A Latinx Theatre Festival at Stages Repertory Theatre in Houston, Texas.
He holds a Ph.D. in Latinx theatre and literature from the Department of Hispanic Studies at the University of Houston where he holds a Graduate Certificate in Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies. He has an MA in Hispanic Studies from Villanova University and a BA in Spanish from Loyola University New Orleans.
