I chat with Nkrumah Gatling, a swing in the immersive production of The Phantom of the Opera known as Masquerade.
Gatling has played all the lead roles in the New York show, including The Phantom. We talk about this one-of-a-kind production where audience members move from room to room to experience, up close, the timeless story about a disfigured musical genius who haunts the Paris Opéra House and becomes dangerously obsessed with a young soprano named Christine Daaé.
THIS EPISODE IS SCHEDULED FOR RELEASE BY NOV. 13.
Masquerade is an immersive theatrical reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, directed by Diane Paulus and produced by Randy Weiner.
The production turns the set into a multi-floor version of the Opera Populaire and the Phantom’s subterranean world. Guests must wear black, white, or silver formal or cocktail attire, along with a mandatory masquerade mask. Rather than sitting in a traditional theater seat, the audience moves through the space alongside the performers, blending into the masquerade ball and interacting with scenes from the Phantom’s perspective.
